The complete guide

What is NAPLAN Year 7?

NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is a yearly check of reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. It is your child’s first NAPLAN in high school.

NAPLAN is not a pass or fail test. It is a snapshot that helps teachers and families see how a child is going. All four tests are done online.

How to prepare

Preparing without the pressure

ACARA, which runs NAPLAN, says students are not expected to study for it and does not recommend excessive practice. What helps is familiarity: knowing how the online tests look and work, so test day feels calm.

  • Keep it low-key — remind your child to simply do their best.
  • Try a practice run, so timed tests on a screen feel familiar.
  • Read together often — it helps every test.
  • Use the Free Test to spot any gaps early.

📝

Conventions of Language

52 questions · 45 min

➗

Numeracy

48 questions · 65 min

A short part without a calculator first, then an on-screen calculator for the rest.

Results & proficiency

How NAPLAN results work

Since 2023, results are reported against four proficiency levels for each test — not the old 1–10 bands:

Schools get the results first; your school then gives you your child’s individual student report, usually early in Term 3. The expected standard rises each year, so the same level in two different years still shows progress.

Common questions

NAPLAN Year 7 FAQ

Can my child fail NAPLAN Year 7?

No. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail test. It is a snapshot of how a child is going, reported as one of four proficiency levels for each test.

Is NAPLAN Year 7 done online?

Yes. In Year 7 all four tests are done online, at school.

Is NAPLAN used for selective school entry?

Not in NSW. Selective high school and opportunity class places are decided by the placement test, not by NAPLAN results.

What is a good NAPLAN result?

Strong or Exceeding, the top two of the four proficiency levels. The old 1–10 bands have not been used since 2023.

How should we prepare?

Gently. ACARA says students are not expected to study for NAPLAN and does not recommend excessive practice. Knowing how the online tests look and work helps test day feel calm.

When do families get the results?

Schools get the results first, then give families their child’s individual student report, usually early in Term 3. Timing can vary between states and territories.
