NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual, nationwide check of literacy and numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It covers Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy, is held each March, and is reported against four proficiency levels. It is not a pass or fail test. In NSW, selective school and opportunity class places are decided by the placement test, not by NAPLAN.
NAPLAN isn't something to cram for — the national authority discourages heavy coaching. The best preparation is gentle familiarity and confidence: a calm child who knows what the tests look like will do their best.

Not in NSW. Selective high school and opportunity class places are decided by the placement test, not by NAPLAN results.
Aim for "Strong" or "Exceeding" of the four levels. The old 1–10 bands are no longer used (since 2023).
Individual reports reach families around the middle of the year (Term 3). Your school distributes them.
